ALBAWABA- In a statement issued on Thursday, Adamu Duza, spokesperson for the Nigeria Correctional Service, revealed that a total of 118 inmates escaped from the Suleija Prison in Niger State, northwestern Nigeria, after heavy rains caused parts of the facility to collapse.

Duza explained that the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleija, Niger state, along with surrounding buildings, was severely damaged by a heavy downpour that lasted for several hours on Wednesday, April 24, 2024.

The destruction included the perimeter fence of the custodial facility, allowing the inmates to escape.

"The Nigeria Correctional Service has activated appropriate mechanisms to search for the escaped inmates and return them to the facility," Duza stated from the capital Abuja.

Additionally, measures have been implemented to secure the facility and rebuild areas affected by the rainfall, Duza added.

Prison breaks have become a major security concern in Nigeria, with thousands of inmates escaping in recent years due to weak infrastructure and militant attacks.
