ALBAWABA - At least six people have been killed while more than 48 went missing after a multi-storey building collapsed in the South African city of George.

According to a statement from George Municipality, search operations continue, and 26 people have been rescued from the rubble since the building fell in the Western Cape region.

"Three teams of rescue personnel are currently working on three different areas within the site of the collapsed building," the municipality continued.

The Western Cape Government stated Tuesday that the rescue operation is expected to take four to five days and will include 111 emergency personnel.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his sympathies in a statement issued by his office on Tuesday, stating, "The President's thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones as well as the families of close to 50 people trapped in the rubble".

Ramaphosa also called for an investigation into how the tragedy occurred, stating that the goal is to "bring closure to the community and prevent a repeat of this disaster."
